{"id":1180,"date":"2021-01-07T21:00:02","date_gmt":"2021-01-08T02:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/?page_id=1180"},"modified":"2021-03-17T10:34:04","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T14:34:04","slug":"covid-19-and-sustainable-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/covid-19-and-sustainable-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 and Sustainable Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Student Government Association&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sustainability Committee <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has put together this list of resources to support the Ramapo College community as they navigate challenges related to sustainability and COVID-19 at this moment in time.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div class=\"accordions\">\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Sustainable Vendors &amp; Discounts<\/p><div>\n<h4>An easy way to know if a company or product is a sustainable is to look for green product labels and third-party certifications when purchasing.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>These labels are symbols that indicate a product has been certified to a specific environmental standard.<\/li>\n<li>Product certification labels can also help consumers to combat greenwashing.<\/li>\n<li>Some notable certifications include <a href=\"https:\/\/bcorporation.net\/\">Certified B Corporation<\/a><span style=\"font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onepercentfortheplanet.org\/\">1% For The Planet<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif\">For a comprehensive list of green labels and certifications please visit the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecolabelindex.com\/\">Ecolabel Index<\/a><span style=\"font-family: proxima-nova, sans-serif\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Ramapo College is a member of the <a class=\"ext\" href=\"http:\/\/www.postlandfill.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN)<\/a>, a network of over 80 campuses across the country. PLAN cultivates, educates, and inspires the student-led zero waste movement.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>All Â鶹´«Ã½ students, faculty and staff are able to access the Member Resources and Discounts on the PLAN website by <a class=\"ext\" href=\"http:\/\/www.postlandfill.org\/wp-login.php?action=register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\">registering<\/a> with their ramapo.edu email.<\/li>\n<li>Resources include<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\"> manuals and guides to campus waste reduction initiatives and resources, leadership trainings, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">1-on-1 advising calls with any PLAN staff member.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Reusable Mask Tips<\/p><div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cloth masks come in more sizes and some are adjustable.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cloth masks will cost less, since you won\u2019t have to keep buying more.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do not reuse blue surgical masks or any other disposable mask as they are intended for single-use.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"item\"><p class=\"question\" tabindex=\"0\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-plus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-minus fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span> Cleaning and Disinfecting<\/p><div>\n<p>The following information is an excerpt from Green Seal&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/greenseal.org\/disinfecting-guidelines\">Cleaning and Disinfecting Guidelines<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 9\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4>Maintain sustainability and healthy indoor air.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols to protect against COVID-19 should not increase exposure to hazardous chemicals for building occupants. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/\">CDC has identified asthmatic individuals as a high-risk group for COVID-19.<\/a> Choosing safer products, especially those that do not contain respiratory irritants, is critical for protecting this high-risk group.<\/p>\n<p>Please do not hoard or overuse cleaning and disinfecting products, or other supplies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1202 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-28-at-4.30.49-PM-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-28-at-4.30.49-PM-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-28-at-4.30.49-PM-1024x681.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-28-at-4.30.49-PM-768x511.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-28-at-4.30.49-PM-1536x1022.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.ramapo.edu\/ramapo-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/64\/2020\/11\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-28-at-4.30.49-PM.png 1792w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 9\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 9\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4>Cleaning Products<\/h4>\n<p>It may be tempting to choose conventional chemical cleaners, but the use of certified green cleaners, such as those certified by Green Seal, is more important than ever during this time of increased cleaning frequency. Certified cleaners are proven to be as safe yet just as effective as harsher, more caustic cleaning products at removing dirt and grime.<\/p>\n<p>Certified green cleaners have benefits beyond safer ingredients and proven efficacy: they are concentrates, designed to be diluted with unheated water, and thus they prevent packaging waste and reduce energy consumption for transportation and water heating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 10\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4>Disinfectants<\/h4>\n<p>There are many types of disinfectant products on EPA\u2019s List N, all of which are effective at deactivating SARS-CoV-2 if used correctly. Unfortunately, disinfectants often include hazardous ingredients linked to asthma, cancer and endocrine disruption. Repeated exposure to these ingredients can increase risk of chronic disease. Given the increasing use of disinfectants amid the pandemic, it is important to assess the health hazards of these products and choose ones with lower hazard profiles. Fortunately, there are safer disinfectants available.<\/p>\n<div class=\"infoBox col-sm-12 col-lg-12  grayBox\"><div class=\"boxContent\">\n<h4>Green Seal recommends choosing List N products with one of the following active ingredients:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>hydrogen peroxide**<\/li>\n<li>citric acid<\/li>\n<li>lactic acid<\/li>\n<li>ethyl alcohol (also called ethanol or just alcohol), or<\/li>\n<li>isopropyl alcohol<\/li>\n<li>peroxyacetic acid**<\/li>\n<li>sodium bisulfate<\/li>\n<li>hypochlorous acid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>**The combination of hydrogen peroxide and peroxyacetic acid is a designated AOEC asthmagen, so avoid products that contain both.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>EPA\u2019s Design for the Environment program (DfE) has reviewed and approved the first six active disinfectant ingredients as being safer than other EPA List N chemicals, but just as effective. LEED\u00ae also requires use of the active ingredients recommended by DfE to earn the LEED\u00ae pilot credit for cleaning and disinfecting. (LEED) In addition to DfE\u2019s recommendations, hypochlorous acid is another active ingredient effective against the COVID-19 virus with a low hazard profile. Green Seal has certified several device-generated hypochlorous acid solutions for use as surface cleaners and disinfectants.<\/p>\n<p>A product\u2019s inactive ingredients and other factors may affect its safety. Refer to the product safety data sheet (SDS) for information on whether the overall product is classified as hazardous by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).<\/p>\n<h4>Hand Soaps and Sanitizers<\/h4>\n<p>Promote frequent handwashing to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Certified hand soaps, such as those certified under Green Seal Standard GS-41, can reduce the occurrence of irritated skin and therefore allow increased frequency of handwashing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"collapsableContent\" tabindex=\"0\"><div class=\"collapsableTitle\"><span class=\"fa-stack\"><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-down fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-up fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\"><\/i><\/span>Resources<\/div><div class=\"c_content\">\n<ul>\n<li>WHO Q&amp;A \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\/question-and-answers-hub\/q-a-detail\/coronavirus-disease-covid-19-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coronavirus disease (COVID-19): Climate change<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sdgs-framework-for-covid-19-recovery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Sustainable Development Goals: Our Framework for COVID-19 Recovery<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Help Maintain A Healthy Campus<\/h3>\n<p>Ramapo College is committed to creating a safe and healthy environment.
